Product Description

Brandon is on a trip to Hong Kong where he meets up with his grandparents and is introduced to his cousin, Kelsey! While touring the city and feasting on local dishes, Brandon thinks he sees a great red dragon – but is it real or imagined? Does anyone else see the dragon? Will Brandon find out before he flies back home? This multicultural, multigenerational chapter book includes some Mandarin Chinese (Simplified) with Pinyin pronunciation, adding layers for those learning or interested in the Chinese language and culture.

My daughters and I enjoyed reading, “Brandon Goes to Hong Kong” together. The story has a great mix of imagination and learning all in one book! Brandon goes on a vacation with his parents and to his surprise, his grandparents join them on their trip. Brandon gets to meet is little cousin, Kelsey, for the first time and they discuss dragons and if they are real. Brandon keeps seeing glimpses of something red during his tour through Hong Kong, making him wonder if he is seeing things or if there really is something there like a real dragon. It's fun to follow along in the book with Brandon's adventures during his family vacation where he learns about different culture, religion, food, mythical creatures, and legends. He even gets to go to Disneyland where he is a nice big cousin and gets a picture with a princess to make his cousin happy. Brandon does his own research during his vacation to find out more about dragons. There are black and white pictures throughout the book and some pictures of various types of dragons. There are also Chinese words mixed throughout the book with a pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book. The glossary at the back of the book is helpful for some of the different Chinese words used in the book. This book works great for a read aloud and would be great for kids to learn about other cultures. It can also inspire kids to do their own research to learn about the things they are interested in.
